Since ancient times, the birch has been considered a sacred tree, symbolizing the virgin goddess for fertility festivals in spring. Even today, maypoles are put up in the villages on the first of May and spring is celebrated. The leaves of most birch species contain significant amounts of flavonoids, saponins, tannins, essential oils and vitamin C. In Finland, the sugar substitute xylitol is obtained from birch trees. In Central Europe, the native sand birch in particular has historically been used in folk medicine. In medicine, the leaves are used for rheumatism, gout and dropsy due to their diuretic effect.
